I know of two unwanted pregnancies, or at least attempted pregnancies, caused by women. Twenty years ago I had my sperm frozen. I tried this new thing called the “Internet” and offered to donate frozen sperm free to married couples. Quickly I had two takers. One woman told me that her marriage was in trouble because she wanted children, her husband didn’t, so she was seeking a sperm donor so she could get pregnant. I declined to send her my sperm. Then I got an angry email from the other woman’s husband. He was very angry that I’d offered to fly there, meet his wife at a motel, and donate, uh, not frozen sperm. An hour later he apologized and said that he now saw that his wife had been emailing with two men, and I hadn’t done anything wrong, but he and his wife were having marital problems and he didn’t want me to email her again. I agreed! I talked to the fertility clinic where my sperm was frozen, asking how often they caught women getting pregnant against their husbands’ wishes (with other men’s sperm). The doctor said that they’d never caught anyone…because they’d never asked a woman if her husband was on board with the pregnancy. She did say that women’s number one criterion in choosing a sperm donor was that he looked like her husband.
